One of the traditionally known Feng Shui Compass is called Luo Pan and it is a tool used in Feng Shui to find personal directions. Lo Pan basically means "everything in a bowl" and the main components of a Feng Shui compass are: magnetic needle, pivot bearing and the housing. The magnetic needle found in Feng Shui compass is fitted on the pivots and a pin like bearing, and the needle shows the direction of the earth's magnetic field. The Feng Shui compass generally, points to magnetic north.
The plate can be designed in metal having wooden or metallic base, and the plate on the wooden base is called Earth plate. The centre of the compass has a magnetic needle and one of the most famous rings is the twenty four direction ring. The compass is based on Feng Shui formulas, which are designed in the form of concentric rings on the plate or the compass. The ring placed in the centre of the compass signifies the environment of the place. This ring is called pre celestial ring and the ring tells you about the chi flow of the room. The information given by the compass can be used to improve chi of the room or the property.
A compass indicates eight directions, which include the four cardinal directions North, South, East and West, and the four secondary directions Northeast, Southwest, Southeast and Northwest. These directions take 45 degree arc on the Bagua, which looks like a pie having eight slices. Each slice of the Bagua is further divided in three sections called mountains, which are of 15 degrees. The compass contains twenty four mounts and heaven arrangements.
There are many types of compasses found at various websites, such as Raymond Lo, Joseph Yu, Lo Pan or Larry Sang. Masters design the compass as per their beliefs. There are some masters, who design the compass to attach their own spin to the compass. There are compass such as San He, Chong He and San Yuan. San He compass is based on the formula of "The harmony schools" i.e. the San He and the San Yuan compass is based on the formula of "Three Cycles schools" or the San Yuan. The third type of compass is based on the combination of both San He and San Yuan.
