Functional consultants will have to get trained on almost all the modules of the ERP such as accounts, production, sales and distribution and the inventory. At least he needs to have through experience on all modules of any enterprise resource planning application. He has to acquire all the knowledge of all the modules because he is going to be the back bone of the ERP implementation. He will take care of the entire communication process when the implementation is going on. His work starts with the requirement gathering and giving proof of concept to the customer before implementation.

His role ends by giving training to the end customer. Module consultants can be called as the functional consultant as he will have in depth knowledge on any one of the modules. Technical consultants will take care of the application development and the customization of the application if required. His role may be limited in the implementation part but he is the key person who is going play a crucial role in altering the application to fit into the customer requirement. The communication between the functional ERP consultant and the technical consultant is very important in the process of implementation because whatever the customization is going to be done is based on the report given by the functional consultants. Technical consultants must undergo severe training on the technicalities of the application. SAP ABAP is the best course for the technical consultants.
Freelance ERP consultants will be hired by the customer. He will take care of the wide range of crucial things starting from vendor evaluation and application feature analysis. Preparing a document and present it to the management and suggests the best solution. Once the solution is short listed, he will help the vendor in the implementation process. He would act as an intermediate communicator between the functional consultant or the project manager of the vendor side and the management of the customer. He regularly updates the progress of the implementation process to the top management at the customer place. He has to have the knowledge on all the functional courses.
