Six Sigma is disciplined, methodology and data driven approach for eliminating all defects from the product. It approach simply measures the quality of the product that strives to near perfection. There are six standards specification. It is highest standard for quality measurement. To achieve this standard, a process should not produce more than 3.4 defects per million.

Six Sigma calculators are available to calculate the process sigma. In its implementation. only cold facts and hard facts are used. There has no place for Intuition in implementation. It is implemented by Green Belts, Black Belts and Master Black Belts. Where Green Belt represents employee, Black Belt represents Project Leader and Master Black Belt represents Quality Manager. It can be implemented with the help of process owner.

As described by Six Sigma Academy, Black Belts save companies approximately $ 230,000 per project and can complete 4 to 6 projects per year. Toyota Motor, one of the best successful companies implementing Six Sigma, has benefited.

Six Sigma improvement projects are accomplished through the use of DMAIC and DMADV sub methodologies. DMAIC (Define Measure Analyze Improve Control) methodology is used when a product or process is available or in existence at your company but is not performing effectively or is not meeting customer specification. DMADV (Define Measure Analyze Design Verify) methodology is used when a product and process is not available and one need to be developed and the available product or process exists and has been optimized and still does not meet customer specification.

Normally it target a 35% to 65% process improvement in 4-6 months. With the help of this program employees become aware of ramifications of not fulfilling customer’s specification.
